Since 2010, Crop to Cup has partnered with smallholder farmers in Burundi, mostly in Kayanza and Muramvya provinces. Our longest partnership has been with Buhorwa and Gatare washing stations, and we add micro-lots from other producers depending on the year. Beyond being a year-over-year buyer, our initiatives here are geared towards improving coffee quality, increasing household incomes, and supporting women in leadership. These initiatives have ranged from nurseries and seedling distribution, agronomy training, washing station sanitation, tasting events for farmers, and gender equity training. The communities have also benefitted from animal husbandry of cows which provides fertilizer, diversified income, and milk for children during drought. Our sourcing strategy here is about more than coffee;  it’s about people and responding to their needs.
